Despite the fact that David was confined to a wheelchair for over half his young life he lived with his disability with resignation, dignity and humour and was an inspiration to those who knew him.
David attended the local community school where he achieved excellent results in the Junior certificate exam.
He was privileged to have had a circle of great friends from the neighbourhood and school who shared the interests which many teenage boys have in common: - computers, sport and music. David's great love was Arsenal FC,
a specific affection which was not shared by all his friends, and this was an ongoing topic of lively discussion and debate!
David's passing left a huge void in the life of his family but we hope that this foundation which was set up in his memory will help make a difference in the life of some disabled people in Lesotho.
The David Foundation was set up in 2007 by members of David Hitchcock's extended family and friends in memory of David who suffered with Muscular Dystrophy and died at the age of 16.
Coping with the normal day to day activities can be a real challenge for any family with a child with disability and they need to draw on the all the support systems which are available from government sources and voluntary organisations. In developed countries like Ireland we now take such support for granted and grants are available for funding housing adaptations and wheelchairs.
The situation is very different in developing countries where no financial support is available to needy families to help provide even the basic needs for those with a disability.
For this reason, the main objective of the David Foundation is to fund the building of suitable housing for people with disabilities in Africa.
